Our priorities are informed by advocates and survivors across the anti-violence movement and diverse LGBTQ communities.

Building Power with Young People

We are working across Institute projects to elevate youth and youth power. We are creating tools for promoting youth leadership in anti-violence organizations, centering youth definitions of violence and well-being, conducting needs assessment for LGBTQ youth of color and a host of other projects.

Increase LGBTQ Survivor Access to DV Advocacy

The Federal Government, States and local programs all have a role to play in ensuring LGBTQ survivors can get the advocacy they need. We offer expertise, guidance (link here to Creating the Conditions for Change), technical assistance and training to policy makers and programs.

Expanding DV advocacy to include economic justice and education access for LGBTQ survivors

We believe economic justice and education access are essential pieces of domestic violence advocacy for LGBTQ survivors.  In order to map a route out of IPV,  survivors  need advocacy that allows them to increase their economic options. That can mean help with name changes, obtaining ID consistent with gender identity and support accessing education.

Assess the results of DV movement efforts to improve criminal justice system responses and expand system change efforts into other arenas.

Many survivors don’t call on the criminal justice system for  help because of their concerns about bias regarding their race, documentation status, gender or sexuality. They are unsure how the system will respond to intimate partner violence, and fear that doing so will lead to harm, such as arrest, job loss, retaliation and community censure or deportation.  The anti-violence movement must take survivor’s concerns seriously, and assess the outcomes of system change efforts.

Improve access to DV advocacy for Bisexual Survivors

Bisexual women experience stalking, rape and domestic violence at high rates.  Bisexual survivors report challenges getting support in both mainstream and LGBTQ organizations. We can do better.

Strengthen LGBTQ “by and for” organizations

LGBTQ organizations have providing innovative interventions around intimate partner violence for years. Many LGBTQ people would prefer to get help at an LGBTQ organization. We support organizations to document, evaluate and disseminate their approaches to intimate partner violence.
